Like attorneys, private investigators work off retainers. Any money not used during the course of the investigation will be promptly refunded. Hourly rates vary depending on the location, expertise of the investigator, and overall difficulty of the case. Expect to pay anywhere from $60 to $100 per hour. Background checks and other such database inquiries are billed at a fixed rate.
